The Palatine Hill is open daily from 9:00, with a closing time that changes by season: from 16:30 in winter to 19:15 at the height of summer. Last admission is about one hour before closing. Closed on 25 December and 1 January (source: colosseo.it).

What time the Palatine opens and closes

The hill follows the same calendar as the Roman Forum, because they share the same archaeological area. Opening is fixed at 9:00 all year; closing stretches out as the days grow longer.

The table sums up the seasonal bands published by the Park. The switch dates between bands can shift by a few days with daylight saving: always check the official site before you set off.

Last admission and time needed

Last admission is about one hour before closing, but to enjoy the hill you should enter well ahead. The Palatine alone needs 1.5-2 hours; with the Roman Forum, count on 3-4 hours. If you hold a combined ticket with the Colosseum, remember that time inside the amphitheatre is 75 minutes (source: colosseo.it).

The best hours to avoid the crowds

Two windows work better than the rest:

  • 9:00-10:30: just after opening, ideal light and clear paths.
  • The last two hours: groups have already moved on and the heat drops, especially in summer.

The middle hours (11:00-14:00), from April to October, are the busiest and hottest: there is little shade on the Palatine. Bring water and a hat.

Tip

On the first Sunday of the month entry is free and cannot be booked: the hill is beautiful but very busy. If you want calm, choose a weekday early in the morning.

Special openings and changes

Some limited-entry rooms โ€” such as the House of Livia and the House of Augustus โ€” have their own slots and times, often tied to a dedicated ticket. For events, restoration or holidays, hours can change: the booking calendar always shows the slots actually available.
