Everything you need for the visit

Six practical sections to plan your day, from up-to-date hours to the hidden imperial palaces.

What to see on the Palatine Hill

The Palatine is one of Rome's seven hills and, by tradition, the place where Romulus founded the city in 753 BC. For centuries it was the most coveted address in the empire: here Augustus, Tiberius and Domitian built residences that gave us the very word "palace".

Within a few hundred metres you cross millennia of history. The highlights you should not miss:

  • Domus Augustana and Domus Flavia — Domitian's vast imperial palace, between state halls and private apartments.
  • Stadium of Domitian — an elongated, circus-shaped garden used for walks and private spectacles.
  • House of Livia and House of Augustus — among the best-preserved frescoes of Roman painting.
  • Farnese Gardens — Europe's first botanical garden, overlooking the Roman Forum.
  • Palatine Museum — finds, sculptures and the reconstruction of Romulus's hut.

For how to get there and when to go, see the opening hours and the prices page.

The golden hour for photos

The first two hours after opening (9:00-11:00) and the last hour before closing offer soft light and fewer people. From the Farnese Gardens the view over the Roman Forum is spectacular early in the morning; from the Domus Augustana side, sunset lights up the Circus Maximus.

Where to enter: the easiest gate

The Roman Forum-Palatine ticket allows entry from several gates. For the hill, the two main ones are Via di San Gregorio (handy from the Colosseum) and Largo della Salara Vecchia, on Via dei Fori Imperiali. The other official gates are the Arch of Titus, Via del Tulliano, Via del Foro Romano and Piazza della Madonna di Loreto (source: colosseo.it).

If you want to start on the Palatine and walk down into the Forum afterwards, choose Via di San Gregorio: the entrance is uphill but usually has shorter queues than the main gate opposite the Colosseum.

How to save on your visit

The Palatine is not sold on its own: it is part of a combined ticket. Here are the legitimate ways to spend less:

  • EU reduced: €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 24.
  • Free entry: under-18s and the first Sunday of the month (conditions on the official site).
  • Roma Pass: a reduced rate for holders of the city card.
  • Combined visits: a guided tour linking Colosseum, Forum and Palatine saves time and often costs little more than entry alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It is not compulsory, but strongly recommended. Entry is organised by time slots and in high season (April-October) same-day availability sells out. Booking online avoids long waits.

Yes. The combined ticket includes the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine and is valid for 24 hours. Time inside the Colosseum is 75 minutes, while the Forum and Palatine are visited freely within the validity (source: colosseo.it).

For the Palatine alone, 1.5-2 hours is enough. Adding the Roman Forum easily brings it to 3-4 hours. For the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine together, plan half a day.

The full combined ticket is €18, the EU reduced rate (18-24) is €2. Free entry and reduced Roma Pass rates also apply (source: colosseo.it). See the prices page.

Part of the route is accessible, but the hill has slopes and uneven ground. Facilitated paths and lifts exist at some points: check the latest details on the Park's official site before your visit.
